The Fundamental Capacity Screen, or FCS, helps move a training decision beyond movement quality alone.

It examines broad capacities such as movement control, loaded postural control, power and impact tolerance. Those results can help determine what deserves more training, what dose may be appropriate and what should be retested.

For athletes and active adults, the value is a clearer bridge between a general movement screen and the physical demands of training or sport.

Movement quality, capacity and skill are different

Three questions are often blended together:

  1. Can you perform a fundamental movement pattern?
  2. How much physical capacity can you express?
  3. Can you apply that capacity to your sport or activity?

The FMS focuses primarily on standardized movement patterns. Sport-specific testing focuses on the exact tasks and skills that matter in competition. The FCS is intended to help examine the middle layer: general physical capacity.

This distinction matters because someone may:

  • move through a pattern comfortably but lack strength or power
  • produce high force but have limited balance or impact tolerance
  • perform well on general tests but lack sport-specific skill
  • score well in one capacity and poorly in another

One test battery cannot answer every performance question.

What does the FCS examine?

Functional Movement Systems describes four broad areas:

  • movement control
  • postural control under load
  • explosive control or power
  • impact control, including storing and reusing energy

The official system uses standardized tests for these capacities. This article intentionally does not reproduce the testing instructions, scoring methods, normative tables or course algorithms.

For a prospective client, the important point is what each category is trying to clarify.

Movement control

Movement control considers how well someone manages balance and body position during a standardized task.

A result may help guide decisions about:

  • unilateral exercise
  • balance demands
  • warm-up selection
  • exercise complexity
  • whether additional movement assessment is needed

Balance performance is affected by task familiarity, fatigue, previous injury, footwear, attention and the testing environment. It should not be reduced to a permanent label.

Postural control under load

Postural control examines the ability to maintain an organized position while carrying an external load.

This may be relevant for:

  • carrying
  • contact preparation
  • occupational demands
  • trunk and grip endurance
  • maintaining position while moving under load

A loaded carry is not a complete test of "core strength." It is one task that combines grip, posture, gait, breathing, strength and willingness to tolerate load.

Explosive control

Explosive control considers power production through standardized jumping tasks.

Jump performance can provide useful information about how quickly someone expresses force. It is influenced by:

  • body mass
  • strength
  • coordination
  • familiarity with jumping
  • use of the arms
  • fatigue
  • training history

Power testing should be interpreted in relation to the person's sport, age, goals and previous exposure. A general jump result does not prove readiness for every explosive activity.

Impact control

Impact control examines the ability to store and reuse energy during repeated elastic activity.

This may matter for running, jumping, court sports and other activities that involve repeated ground contact.

The testing demand must be appropriate. Someone with current pain, recent injury, inadequate preparation or a medical contraindication should not be pushed through repeated impact simply to obtain a score.

What can FCS results be used for?

FCS results may help a coach:

  • establish a repeatable performance baseline
  • identify which general capacity is relatively limited
  • choose a more relevant training emphasis
  • compare retest results
  • avoid assuming that every limitation is a mobility problem
  • decide when sport-specific testing is still needed

The result should be interpreted alongside:

  • training history
  • current program
  • injury and health history
  • sport or occupational demands
  • strength levels
  • conditioning
  • recovery
  • technical skill
  • the person's actual goal

What does the evidence show?

The FCS is a proprietary testing system built from established categories such as balance, loaded carrying, jumping and elastic activity.

Individual components of physical performance can be measured reliably when standardized. However, independent research validating the complete FCS battery, its interpretation and its ability to improve outcomes is limited.

That means public claims should remain narrow.

The FCS may provide structured performance information. It should not be claimed to:

  • predict whether an individual will be injured
  • diagnose the cause of pain
  • prove readiness for every sport
  • identify one hidden physical weakness
  • guarantee that an FCS-guided program will improve performance

The useful test is whether the information leads to a better program and whether the relevant capacity improves.

Can an FCS finding guide training without complete validation?

Yes.

Independent validation of the complete proprietary battery is limited, but the underlying capacities such as balance, loaded carrying, jumping and repeated impact are legitimate performance qualities.

A result can be used as a working training hypothesis:

  1. Identify the capacity that appears relatively limited.
  2. Confirm that the finding fits the person's sport, training history and goal.
  3. Train that capacity with an appropriate dose.
  4. Retest after enough time for adaptation.
  5. Check whether the improvement transfers to a meaningful performance outcome.

If the test improves but training or sport performance does not, the result may have limited practical value. If both improve, the program may be useful without claiming that the original test predicted injury or proved one hidden weakness.

A capacity finding should change the training dose

The FCS is more useful when it identifies which quality is limiting the next training decision.

For example:

  • good movement quality with limited repeated-force capacity may suggest conditioning or work-capacity development
  • acceptable strength with poor impact tolerance may suggest a gradual landing or deceleration progression
  • a side-to-side capacity difference may influence exercise order, volume or monitoring
  • a result that does not match sport performance may indicate that a more specific test is needed

The result should not produce a generic corrective program.

It should influence one or more training variables:

  • exercise selection
  • load
  • volume
  • density
  • speed
  • impact exposure
  • recovery between efforts
  • retesting interval

Improving the screen is useful only when it helps the athlete tolerate or perform the activity that matters.

How is FCS different from ordinary fitness testing?

Traditional fitness testing may measure strength, aerobic fitness, sprinting, jumping or muscular endurance separately.

The FCS organizes selected capacities within one movement-based framework. That structure can be useful, but it does not invalidate other established tests.

The best battery is the smallest one that answers the client's real question.

A powerlifter may need barbell strength and competition-specific measures. A martial artist may need repeated explosive efforts, directional speed and technical performance. An active adult may need strength, balance and work-capacity measures that relate to daily life.

Testing should follow the goal rather than forcing every person through the same performance combine.

What should happen after testing?

A useful performance assessment should lead to a clear training decision.

For example:

  • build a general strength base
  • improve single-leg control
  • increase power
  • prepare for impact gradually
  • improve work capacity
  • maintain a strength while addressing another limitation
  • use more sport-specific testing
  • refer pain or medical concerns for appropriate assessment

Retesting should occur only when enough training has happened to expect a meaningful change.

How the FCS may fit at Lee Strength

At Lee Strength, FCS-informed testing would belong within strength and performance coaching, not Registered Massage Therapy.

I have completed FCS certification training. This supports standardized use of the system, but it does not establish that the complete screen predicts injury or guarantees better performance outcomes.

My role as a CSCS® is to connect testing with:

  • progressive programming
  • exercise technique
  • load management
  • strength and power development
  • return to training
  • sport and activity goals

If pain or another health concern makes performance testing inappropriate, the correct starting point may be RMT, rehabilitation, medical assessment or referral.

The purpose of testing is not to collect numbers. It is to make the next training decision more precise.
